Chumbe Island is a unique nature reserve which consists of a private island, a mere eight kilometres (5 miles) off the North West coast of Zanzibar. It encompasses both the Chumbe Reef Sanctuary and the Chumbe Forest Reserve.
The Sanctuary is home to more than 200 species of pristine stone corals and more than 400 species of fish, with regular visits from turtles and dolphins. The Reserve is a coral rag forest with unique flora, and is also home to many reptiles, birds and crabs, including the rare coconut crab.
Accommodation is in seven eco-friendly bandas, all of which are built using local materials, including coconut palm thatch. Each banda has solar-powered lighting, is en-suite with an earth-closet toilet, and the hot water for the shower is also solar-heated. Activities include snorkelling on the reef and walking trails on the island – all accompanied by trained Park Rangers. Although diving is not allowed off the island itself, it can be arranged in neighbouring areas, at an extra cost.
