At Nkwali you will drive, walk and boat. Most of the game in this area remains resident all year and so the gameviewing is always excellent and hopefully see wild dog as it is the season for our top viewing season for the dogs. After a few nights you will boat slowly up the Luangwa River, to Nsefu, birdwatching and gameviewing on the way. The transfer is around 3 hours.
At Nsefu the emphasis will be on exploring the flooded ebony groves and lagoon system, flowing channels and tributaries by boat. There will also be excellent walking, including a boat and walking combination to reach one of southern Africa’s largest yellow billed stork colonies in full action. |
The Luangwa Valley is at its most dramatic in the Emerald Season, with the Luangwa River now flowing over into the
brimming lagoons. Boating into these lagoons, flooded ebony groves and flowing channels gives you a view of the
Valley which is normally inaccessible during this season.
With the bush at peak growth many of the animal species, from mammals to birds, are in breeding. The crystal clear
days give way to dramatic skyscapes as the storms build in the late afternoon light.
The nights are usually when the rain falls, giving rise to clear mornings – perfect for photography. The wildlife move to
the drier areas where there is the option to drive or walk. These activities, along with the boating ensure the safari
experience is an adventure.
Nsefu is located near one of the largest ebony groves of the Valley – wonderful for boating in during the morning light.
There are many great walking areas in the area and the chance to visit one of southern Africa’s largest yellow-billed
stork colonies as the birds are building nest and laying eggs.
Nkwali Camp is open throughout the year, but now Robin Pope Safaris will also open Nsefu Camp during the weeks of
the peak high waters. We have three swamp ali boats for the camps and so can keep the famous RPS flexibility.

ROBIN POPE SAFARIS CAMP INFORMATION
Robin Pope Safaris - Accommodation, meals, drinks, laundry, gameviewing activities, transfers, National Park fees.
Nkwali Camp - Located on Robin's private land, overlooking the National Park. The land is superb gameviewing country, with a beautiful area of ebony woodland and open grass plains. Elephants often cross the Luangwa, seen from the bar, or come to the waterhole near the thatched dining room. The chalets are cool and spacious, overlooking the river. Access to the park is through the main entrance over the bridge, by boat or by our nearby pontoon. The area is famous for leopard and giraffe sightings. 12 guests, en suite bathrooms, open all year, walking, drives, night drives. |
Nsefu Camp - On a sweeping bend of the river, 12 kilometers north of Tena Tena, lies Nsefu. Nsefu was the first game camp in Zambia and dates back to the early fifties. The Nsefu Sector was recognised then as a phenomenal area and it still is. We reopened the camp in 1999, in keeping with the original style, and so operate the only 2 camps in the Nsefu Sector of the park.
The view of the river is superb and includes a terraced area where game grazes during the day. The bar, tucked in beside a huge extinct termite mound, overlooks a waterhole that is very productive for game, especially leopard at night. The original rondavels have been extended, with a spacious bathroom added. Each room has a clear view of the river, through large windows and from the new wooden verandah. The camp lies in the heart of the undeveloped Nsefu sector and so offers charm and total comfort in remoteness and seclusion. 12 guests, en suite bathrooms, open late May - October, walking, drives, night drives. |
