Robben Island

Often misspelled as Robbin Island or Robin Island, the correct spelling is in fact Robben Island. Possibly most famous as the penal colony on which Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for much of the 23 years he  suffered at the hands of the apartheid government, Robben Island also has an interesting history dating back to the days of the early Dutch settlers when they first colonised the Cape of Good Hope. Daily ferries plough their way between the V&A Waterefront and Robben Island daily (weather permitting).

Visited by wine lovers from around the world, the Cape Wine Routes are an absolute must when visiting Cape Town. If you are without transport you can either hire a car and drive yourself through the scenic wine valleys or our reception desk can assist you in arranging a suitable tour with an approved tour operator.

  • Cape Argus/Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour - arguably one of the biggest sporting events on the Cape Town calendar  that sees some 30 000 cyclists participating in the one of the most scenic cycle tours in the world. The event attracts both competitive and casual cyclists alike and includes various events for the whole family during the week leading up to the cycle. The event is held in March each year.
  • Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon - since humble beginnings in 1970, this marathon following a beautiful 56km scenic route around the Cape Peninsula now attracts over 12 000 entrants, including competitors from overseas.
