Map
Akeru is a comfortable 5-hour drive from Johannesburg.

Recommended route:
By Road: Via Hoedspruit
From Johannesburg head for Witbank via either the Pretoria or Brakpan/Benoni highway. Continue on the N4 until Belfast and turn left. Follow the Lydenburg, Ohrigstad and Hoedspruit directions until you reach Hoedspruit. Go through Hoedspruit to the T-junction and turn right onto the R40. Continue for 8 km and then turn left onto the main Timbavati/Eastgate road and continue straight to the central Timbavati control gate. Once in the reserve continue for 2.2km until you see the directions sign board (on the left hand side of the road), turn right here and follow the Akeru signs to the camp.
Via Nelspruit
From Nelspruit take the R40 to White River, from there continue to Hazyview. In Hazyview continue on the R40 to Bushbuckridge and Acornhoek. Continue past Acornhoek and the Orpen gate road until you see the Hoedspruit turnoff to the right. Take the turnoff and go past Kapama on your right. Eventually you will see the main Timbavati/Eastgate airport road turnoff to the right and continue to the central control gate. Once in the reserve continue as per directions above.
By Air to Hoedspruit/Eastgate and KMI Airport:
SA Express offer daily flights to Hoedspruit/Eastgate Airport (30km from Akeru) from Johannesburg and Cape Town. SA Airlink/Express and Nationwide Airlines offer daily flights to KMI (Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport) (120 km from Akeru) from Johannesburg, Cape Town and other major centres throughout the country. Transfers from both airports can be arranged on request. Private aircraft charters can also be arranged on request.
Timbavati Conservation Fee
Please note there is a Timbavati entrance fee of R90 per person payable on entering the reserve. R75 per vehicle is charged by the Association of Private Nature Reserves in the region for access through the main gate.
The conservation fee contributes enormously to the running of the reserve and also serves to finance various other very worthwhile conservation projects that are undertaken by the Timbavati management.
