Please note: we are set on the edge of a gorge so our landscape profile is very steep. ACCOMMODATION:
Our 15 suites all have private decks overlooking forest vistas and offer guests relaxed luxury in an unforgettable setting. King size beds, earthy tones, fireplaces, hammocks and hand-crafted artifacts are just a few of the comfortable touches that welcome guests to their private retreat.
Guests sleep comfortably in crisp linen and each night there is a special turndown. On chilly winter nights, we slip a hot water bottle between the sheets just in case the cosy fireplace isn't enough. Rooms are fitted with mini bars and mini hi-fis but no TVs or telephones. |
These comfortable African-styled rooms, situated in the gardens surrounding the main house, are decorated in earthy colours, naturally woven fabrics, north-eastern African artefacts and tones and local handcrafted woods. Each room has an en suite bathroom with bath and shower and private wooden deck, fitted with its own hammock and wooden furniture overlooking the forest.
Hog Hollow is well known for its delectable food and friendly, personalised service. Meals are prepared using the freshest local produce and any guests with specific dietary requirements will be catered for individually. Farmhouse breakfasts are served on the wooden deck overlooking the forest on crisp clear days or indoors near the huge fireplace when it is cooler. In the evenings, enjoy scrumptious dinners around the communal table in the convivial comfort of the candle-lit main house. You can also enjoy a picnic on the banks of the stream running through the reserve or laze about the pool soaking up the sun. |
The Main House:
Overlooking the Matjies River Gorge, this congenial hub is where it all happens.
Kick off your shoes, grab an icy drink from the bar and relax. There are three lounge areas to escape to with a book, a pair of binoculars, or just your thoughts.
The pool lounge leads out onto cool blue waters where you may find others lazing about on comfy recliners. |
 |
The reading room offers a quiet haven and a leafy vista of the indigenous forest valley and Tsitsikama Mountains. If you're a bird lover we advise you head straight for the Ficus lounge where an ancient fruit-laden tree is a favourite with Plett's prolific bird community. |

HISTORY:
In 1993, what was to become Hog Hollow Country Lodge, was an alien wattle plantation set in the semi wilds of a little known area called the Crags. Twenty five years ago, farmers were encouraged to do away with the rare, indigenous forest and fynbos which grow only in this small Tsitsikamma area, to plant the fast-growing, invasive and alien strangling species of Australian Wattle which produced commercially viable tannin and pulp for the leather industry.
Andy Fermor, after a six year sojourn in England and South East Asia, decided to use his skills and energy to invest in the fledgling democracy of the New South Africa. With not much financial backing but lots of enthusiasm, what started out as a dream has become a paradise within paradise.
While Hog Hollow rose from the wattle wasteland, Debbie Reyneke was considering her options. Years of hard work put her at the top of her profession in the hotel industry, but always at the back of her mind was the idea of being involved in the creation of something within tourism in a more meaningful and hands-on manner.
A great walker and enthusiastic lover of nature, Debbie invited a friend to walk the Otter Trail ~ a five day trail on the edges of wild coast of the Tsitsikamma. Tired and hungry at the end of a successful walk, her friend suggested they have dinner in a newly created lodge she'd heard about, built on the edge of a gorge ~ a place called Hog Hollow.
A fine idea! And when Debbie met Andy ... well, the rest, they say, is history.
Both South African-born and bred, one of their strongest desires was to employ and train local people from the surrounding communities to work at Hog Hollow in the various facets of the tourism industry. People, who had spent most of their lives either unemployed, in menial jobs and overlooked in the fields of advancement, were now on the threshold of a new experience. Right here, within our community, was a new and vital energy with lots of exceptional talent waiting to be unleashed.
It’s an interesting journey Hog Hollow is embarked upon, not without it’s hiccups, but ultimately, very satisfying.
THE HOG TEAM:
As a South African business, Hog Hollow is 100% committed to transformation and employment of previously disadvantaged people and only employ local people from Plettenberg Bay. Each new staff member is put through a rigorous training programme to ensure we continue to meet international standards of service excellence.
We are especially proud of our team who go out of their way to make our guest’s stay a memorable and relaxing experience. It’s often the same friendly faces who welcome guests back on their return. |
