Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is built into the rim of a dormant and collapsed volcano (known as a caldera). Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact caldera, with over 20 000 animals making this their permanent home.
The Lodge, with its plant and ivy-covered native stonewalls, blends quietly into the surroundings. There are 75 guest rooms, all with en suite showers and most have a private terrace. Due to the prevailing cool climate in the region, the lounge and dining room are set indoors, with large picture-glass windows providing excellent views of the Crater.
All the main areas are complemented by log fires which enhance the atmosphere. The Lodge’s unique design continues into the restaurant and bar, with magnificent examples of prehistoric cave paintings etched into the walls. The full service lounge has an outdoor balcony with a fixed telescope for guests’ enjoyment.
Activities available from the Lodge include full-day trips into the caldera, visits to a local Maasai village or visits to the famous Olduvai Gorge – the “birthplace of man” (all at an additional cost).
