INHAMBANE:
This is a tropical area with deserted white beaches and clear tropical waters - and it is largely undiscovered by tourists. Although there are tourist hotels in the town of Nacala and on Mozambique Island, there are few organised tourist facilities. The focus for visitors will be the wonderful desolation and also the fascinating architecture. Mozambique Island, which is a World Heritage Site, is largely undiscovered by tourists and is a fascinating destination.
The city of Inhambane is one of the oldest settlements in southern Africa. In 1534, Portuguese traders established a permanent presence and a trading post there and their influence can be seen in the architecture and layout of the city. There are many old buildings in the city, in varying states of repair. The market, which is well-organised and clean, is well worth a visit, and is good value particularly for locally produced woven straw baskets and mats.
Those heading directly for the beaches should drive down the main street of the town. At the roundabout, take the right hand turn (near the Clube Ferroviário) and continue straight out along this road. The road narrows as you leave the town and from here, it is about 21km to the fork for Ponta da Barra and Tofo beach.
Inhambane is a photographers dream; it possesses a unique charm that can only originate from a rusty old town with dilapidated buildings and neglected maintenance. It is worth exploring the fascinating mix of African, old-world Portugese and Muslim cultures.
While little more than two main roadways, Inhambane offers a comforting break on the journey north to Beira, or to the beautiful beaches of Tofu. The main boulevard, directly opposite the ferry port, offers small shops, the central market, very limited banking services (no ATM, no travellers cheques) and possibly the best fresh bread in all of Mozambique. Accommodations in Inhambane are limited as most tourists head east towards Tofu. Minibuses leave from behind the Market regularly - 10,000 Meticals one-way. Inhambane also offers decent Internet access, though regular power disruptions may mean a lost email or two.
Tofo Beach:
Tofo Beach is in Inhambane Province, Mozambique. It has been described as "the next Goa", and while this may be pushing it a bit, Tofo has definitely become a traveller's mecca on the Eastern coast of Africa. The reasons are not hard to discern: beautiful stretches of beach, a friendly laid-back vibe, a small but pumping nightlife, great diving and snorkelling and a few good restaurants too. |
