Duma Lodge

Dumazulu Traditional Village and Lodge is situated in the heart of Zululand, near Hluhluwe.

Visitors are able to enjoy an authentic African cultural experience when they stay in the traditional, ethnic accommodation at Dumazulu Lodge. The lodge consists of twenty three units, the exterior of each resembling the different tribal people of Southern Africa, including Zulu, Swazi, North Sotho, Xhosa, Venda, Tsonga and Ndebele. The interior is tastefully decorated in ethnic fabrics and tribal memorabilia. Facilities include private en-suite bathrooms with showers, air-conditioning, telephone and tea/coffee making facilities. The Lodge also features a thatch-roofed lapa with seating for up to 120 people which is available to be used as an event/function or team-building venue.

The lodge offers cultural shows three times per day and has an indoor boma ideal for conference and event groups. An added attraction is the snake and crocodile park, world renowned curio shop and al fresco covered dining experience.

Tribal Tours
There are three daily tours; 08:15, 11:00 and 15:15 where a qualified guide will accompany guests on a tour of the Village and explain the various ancient traditions. The knowledgeable guide will also answer questions and provide insights into the heritage and culture of the Zulu nation. The cultural experience culminates in a variety of spectacular Zulu dances.

Day 1:
Arrive in Durban and transfer to Tropicana Hotel situated on Durban’s famous Golden Mile. Enjoy magnificent all year round warm weather of Durban and the swimming beaches which are world renowned blue flag beaches. The delights and atmosphere of the beachfront with everything from curios, fun rides, the snake park, a visit to uShaka Marine World, our local pubs an restaurants, or just relaxing and soaking up the sun on white sandy beaches.

Day 2:
Enjoy a leisurely full buffet breakfast thereafter, enjoy a variety of day tours which can be arranged directly from the hotel. You will have the opportunity to experience the cultural diversity of our city and visit our famous Pavillion or Gateway Centres for a once in a lifetime shopping experience. Alternatively take a scenic drive down the beautiful south coast. Stop for lunch at one of the many restaurants along the way. Relax on the Clippers Sidewalk for per-dinner drinks.

Day 3:
Early breakfast and check out – travel through the majestic Kingdom of the Zulu to Zululand. On arrival at the Dumazulu Traditional Village & Lodge, attend the traditional show which gives an insight to the traditional life of the Zulu nation. Guests can learn about weapon, bead, basket, and hut making skills and can enjoy a display of vibrant, pulsating Zulu dancing.

Enjoy a delicious BBQ lunch in an open dining area, followed by a visit to the Snake & Crocodile Park where guests can view an array of different snake species and sub-species from all over the world, as well as crocodile in an enclosed area. Follow this with a visit to the world renowned curio shop for that reminiscing gift.

Day 4:
Leisurely breakfast and depart for Bushlands Game Lodge and Spa. After check-in to experience the true magnificence of the African bush enjoy an all day game drive in open vehicles through the Hluhluwe / Umfolozi Game Reserve one of the oldest reserves in the Southern Africa and world famous for the saving of the white rhino from extinction. Lunch can be arranged from the Lodge prior to departure . Return to the lodge, relax after an eventful day of sightings. Meet for pre-dinner drinks in the boma whilst star – gazing and relaxing around a large open fire. Dinner is served in the dining room followed by a nightcap around the fire at the Boma.
Overnight at Bushlands Game Lodge.

Day 5:
After a leisure breakfast enjoy a scenic walk on the property or simply relax in the private viewing hide. Suggested option is to enjoy the Bushlands Forests Salon experience which offers a selection of beauty and wellness treatments in the heart of the bush.
A lake cruise on Lake St Lucia can also be arranged from the Lodge.
Another suggestion is a late afternoon game drive in an open vehicle through the Hluhluwe / Umfolozi Game Reserve –

Day 6:
After a leisurely breakfast, travel back to Durban. Enjoy a leisurely lunch and afternoon at the Suncoast Casino and Entertainments centre on Durban beachfront.
Overnight at Tropicana Hotel.

Day 7:
Breakfast early and depart for the Southern Drakensberg. Take a scenic drive meandering through the valleys of the Southern Drakensberg.

On arrival at the Drakensberg Gardens Golf & Leisure Resort take advantage of the many recreational activities available at the resort, such as tennis, bowls, volleyball, badminton, fishing, horse riding and squash. Alternatively spend the afternoon relaxing next to the sparkling swimming pool. With time available there is a special opportunity to treat yourself to a beauty / wellness treatment at the Body & Soul Salon.

Dine at one of the restaurants available on the resort and enjoy a nightcap in the relaxing Buck & Trout bar or if you want more sporting action, the Wildcat bar.
Overnight at Drakensberg Gardens Golf & Leisure Resort.

Day 8:
Breakfast at leisure. Enjoy a 18 hole game of golf at The Glengarry Country Club (situated on the resort), which overlooks the picturesque Lake KwaNyoni with beautiful mountains as a backdrop. If you are more adventurous, you can take up the challenge of a nine hour hike to the Rhino Horn peak. Alternatively, you can enjoy a Sani Pass excursion which can be arranged from the hotel on your behalf. This is an exciting experience as you can enjoy a hearty pub lunch at the highest pub in Africa.

Return to the resort in the late afternoon for sundowners on the terrace overlooking the magnificent mountains (weather permitting) or curl up in the warm reading lounge (Peacock Lounge).

Day 9:
After breakfast you can leisurely check out of your room and you are more than welcome to spend the day on the resort and depart after lunch should you so wish.
Enjoy a leisurely onward journey.

Tribal Village
The lodge is connected by wooden walkways to Dumazulu Village, where guests can watch and learn about Zulu traditions including basket-weaving, spear and shield making, beadwork, pot-making, Sangoma bone-throwing and spectacular Zulu dancing.

The Dumazulu Traditional Village is home to over 50 Zulu residents forming part of a "living museum".

Dumazulu - meaning "Thundering Zulu" is the largest Zulu village of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and the only tourist Zulu village to be opened by King Goodwill Zwelithini - placing the royal Zulu stamp of approval on the objectives and authenticity of Dumazulu.

Facilities include private en-suite bathrooms with showers, air-conditioning, telephone and tea/coffee making facilities. In addition guests can enjoy the visit to the ethnic tribal village and enjoy cultural shows three times per day. Al fresco dining and bar in spectacular forest setting. A thatch-roofed lapa seating up to seating up to 120 people ideal for conferences and events.

An added attraction is the snake and crocodile park which consists of many indigenous and exotic reptiles.

Guests can also take time to relax around the swimming pool, enjoying the tranquil environment of the African bush.

Game drives into the many surrounding Game Reserves and tours to nearby tourists attractions can also be arranged.
