About Us

The roots of the Gooderson Leisure Corporation were established in 1957, when Mr R H Gooderson father of AW Gooderson acquired the first of his hotels in Durban; the Lonsdale Hotel situated at 57 West Street, one block from the beachfront through the acquisition of a number of hotels, the company grew from one hotel to thirteen hotels in 1970.

The Drakensberg Gardens Resort was acquired in 1967, allowing the company to provide tourists with a variety of holiday options. The company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1968 Gooderson Hotels Limited (‘Goodtel’).

Alan Gooderson was appointed Operations Director of the company in 1968 and Managing Director in 1975. In 1972 he purchased the shares from his family, and after being appointed the new Chairman and CEO, he decided to take the company in another direction, the first step being to delist from the Stock Exchange which was completed in 1975 Gooderson Leisure Corporation relisted on the ALTX Board on 26 September 2006.
With a number of hotels located on the beachfront, the company has experienced and survived the changing demographics and requirements of the tourism market through the past twenty years. The strategy implemented by Alan W Gooderson included the sale of non-profitable hotels; with the result that only two beachfront hotels i.e. Tropicana and Beach Hotel and the Drakensberg Gardens Golf & Leisure Resort situated in the Mountains in the Southern Drakensberg have remained in the Gooderson stable.
