Natal Spa Hot Spring Resort & Conference Centre

Natal Spa - Hot Springs Resort and Conference Centre
On the road between Vryheid and Paulpietersberg on the Battlefields Route, you come upon an oasis and a haven of peace – The Natal Spa.

This resort famed for its hot mineral waters has been in existence since the late 19th century. Just as it provided rest for travellers in those days, so it does today….And the supply of water emanating from the springs has not diminished in strength – or temperature!

The first “patrons” were the Trekkers when it was the halfway stopping point between South Africa and the then Lourenco Marques when it was a farm known as “Koubad”. Owing to the volume of traffic it became a trading post serving refreshments. Three bedrooms were added later and … the rest is history.

Originally owned by the Ries family, the resort has been under the ownership of the Rumble family since 1955. A new era dawned on 1 September 2006 when the Gooderson Leisure Group became the new owners.

Set on 800 hectares of KZN bushveld, the Natal Spa has access to about four kilometers of the Bivane River flowing through the property. You will certainly find peace and quiet in the tranquil surroundings – the only sounds being the birds, the rushing of the river and the rustle of the tall trees which abound in the garden and beyond. The resort offers much for the visitor be it for a weekend or – more beneficially – for a longer period.

Each room has TV offering 6 channels including M-Net and tea/coffee-making facilities. A caravan park and camping sites are also on the premises. Campers and self-catering patrons have access to the hotel’s facilities, but what bliss it must be to braai and sit under the trees and just relax!

And for the kiddies a great 110m long SUPERTUBE is available alongside the hot pools, so parents can keep an eye on the young ones enjoying themselves.

Attractions/Activities
Although you will find plenty of spots to relax, the Natal Spa really caters for the entire family - the focus being on recreation for the entire family. You will have to spend more than just a weekend there to take advantage of them all. For the active, there is squash, tennis, hiking, birding trails and fishing. Indoors, relax with some snooker, table tennis or darts.

The main attraction is of course the mineral water pools – however once you have relaxed sore muscles there, cool off in the “normal” swimming pools. You will find a total of nine hot and cold mineral water pools.

The hot springs have the benefit of being “Triple Waters” which means that they contain carbonates, chlorides and sulphates and have a temperature at the source of 40 degrees C.

The enormous granite boulders in the gardens make for unusual features. As you walk around the grounds, don’t be alarmed by some scuttling little creatures – they are the dassies (rock rabbits) which of course find the rocks ideal places for sunning themselves.

Four hiking trails are demarcated and Bushmen paintings can be viewed near to the hotel.

Recommended is the birding walk, led by SASOL qualified guide, Simon Zwane, who is indeed an authority on the bird life. On my visit, a walk of only one hour’s duration revealed some 20 different bird species in the grounds alone, however in excess of 197 bird species have been identified in the surrounds and the Natal Spa is proudly home to a pair of breeding Crowned Eagles. The birding walks are on request. En route you will enjoy a scenic route, passing the Big Rock near the hot sulphur pools and the river.

Attractions:
The waters that are found at Natal Spa are “Triple Waters”. They contain carbonates, chlorides and sulphates, and have a source temperature of 40 C. The invigorating and healing properties of hot mineral waters have been known for centuries, and since being discovered in the 1880’s, the springs have provided a constant supply of the beneficial waters. There are 5 different pools to relax in, all at varying temperatures.

The resort is also a birding hot spot, and boasts over 160 bird species, as well as a breeding pair of Crowned Eagles.

4 demarcated hiking trails for the walking enthusiast offer the delight of genuine Bushman paintings in close proximity to the resort.

Huge magnificent granite boulders in the gardens provide perfect conditions for the local Hyrax or rock Rabbit population, commonly known as “ Dassies”.
