A Reason For Being
It is still the lure of gold that draws humans to the African bush - the gold of a lion's mane pushing purposefully through the tall yellow grasses of the savannah, the glitter of an eagle's eye, the haze of a molten sunset.
But is was a very different kind of gold that first drew men to the region. More than 70 years ago, the gold-rich capital of Thula Mela, situated on a hill at the fork of the Limpopo and Lebuvu Rivers 200km north of Jock Safari Lodge, served as the trading centre of Southern Africa.
|
Then in the late 1800s, an influx of European gold speculators ran the gauntlet of wild animals between Delgoa Bay and the gold fields of the interior. Fortunately most of these transient humans made little impact on either the landscape or wildlife of the region which is now one of the most prized natural environments on our planet.
The lodge is named after a local legend, Jock of the Bushveld. This canine hero of Sir Percy Fitzpatrick's famous story of courage and loyalty has stirred adventurous souls for a hundred years. |
The Great Outdoors
Jock Safari Lodge is one of the very first privately owned camps situated in the world famous Kruger National Park, with exclusive traversing rights in what is regarded as the best Big Five game viewing in the Kruger National Park.
Daily guided game drives and walks led by professional rangers offer close encounters with Africa's wildlife. At dawn and dusk, avoiding the heat of the day, guests are invited to follow paths through the bush to discover the mysteries of this unspoilt wilderness.
They might encounter a grazing rhino, a majestic leopard, a rare raptor or an exquisite rock painting left thousands of years ago by local hunter-gatherers at any turn. Birders and photographers will be overwhelmed by the opportunities afforded by the open savannah.
