Emayani Beach Lodge

EMAYANI BEACH LODGE - PANGANI - TANZANIA:
Emayani is a small & friendly lodge built in a coconut grove on the shore of Tanzania’s mainland, just opposite to Zanzibar island.

Our palm-thatched bungalows provide comfortable accommodation with a ‘Robinson Crusoe’ ambience. All have verandas with superb views of the Indian Ocean, large cool rooms with comfortable beds, and ‘en suite’ bathrooms.

When you visit us we want you to feel at home, and at ease. There are no stuffy rules, or inflexible timings. So leave your watch in your room, kick off your shoes, enjoy the warm white sand and the clear blue water. Emayani is the perfect place to unwind; however you like to do that. If you fancy sunning yourself we have miles of almost deserted pristine white beach for you.

If you like to curl up with a good read we have sunbeds in the shade of the coconut palms, where you won’t be distracted till the waiter brings the sundowner you ordered. If you want something more active we have all sorts of activities; snorkelling, sailing, fishing, bird watching, cultural tours, walks…plenty to keep you occupied for the whole of your stay.
So welcome, or ‘Karibu’, come and join us to enjoy Emayani Beach Lodge.

Our spacious and airy palm leaf bungalows, or ‘bandas’ are widely spaced along the shore of our own coconut grove.

The bandas are built from renewable local materials…coconut-leaf mats and sisal poles. They blend into the environment and provide a comfortable shady retreat from the warmth, with all the comforts you would expect.

At the front of each banda is a wide verandah with comfy chairs, where you can sit and watch the ocean or enjoy your sundowner.

Inside is a large bedroom with a huge, very comfortable bed. There is plenty of space so we can easily add additional beds without crowding. And though we aren’t much troubled by insects, all beds have spacious mosquito nets.

Beyond the bedroom is an ‘en suite’ bathroom with a western style toilet, shower, and solar heated water.

The bandas have windows with roll up blinds which allow you to control the cooling effect of the sea breeze. If you like you can roll up all the blinds and enjoy having the view of the ocean and palms all around you.

Start the day right! Breakfast is ready whenever you choose to get up. Freshly squeezed orange juice and a platter of tropical fruit to begin, then home made granola or cereals. After that those with an appetite can select their favourite cooked breakfast; eggs, bacon, sausages, pancakes…Just ask the waiters for whatever you like best. All of this is of course washed down with endless tea and coffee. Exactly what you need to set you up for the day whether it’s active or relaxed.

Our menu of light tasty meals includes salads, seafood, sandwiches, burgers, chips…dishes to tempt everyone. Lunch can be ordered any time you feel like eating between 11 and 5pm.
Each afternoon we create a 3 course dinner menu, making the most of the days fishing catch, and the best of the seasons fruit and vegetables. However our kitchen staff are creative and flexible so if you find something on the menu that doesn’t suit you have a chat with them and sort out a tasty alternative from their broad repertoire of European, Asian, Swahili and of course vegetarian dishes.

A great range of drinks are always available from our well stocked bar. We have a good selection of wines together with imported and local beers and spirits.

If you fancy a treat why not ask our barman to concoct a cocktail, or make a shooter for you. Let him spoil you with something fresh and fruity as a ‘sundowner’, a zingy ‘pick me up’ or a rich luxurious treat to provide the perfect end to an evening.

There are a surprising variety of things to do in and around Pangani.

What better way to unwind than to pull your beach bed into the shade of a palm and settle down for a good read? If you finish your books, don’t worry we have a small library stocked with all sorts of good books you can borrow.

For something a little more active take a dip into the clear waters of the Indian Ocean. If you’d like to snorkel we have masks and flippers to hire.

You can either swim from the shore and explore the small corals nearby, or you can arrange to go by boat to Maziwi Island. This small sand island was recently designated a marine reserve, it sits on a stunning coral reef, and snorkeling here offers great opportunities to see varied corals and sea creatures.

An ‘Ngalawa’ wooden outrigger, is ready to take you to the best fishing spots. The ocean here teems with fish and there is a very good chance of catching something, it could be anything from a guppy to a barracuda. We have life jackets you can rent if you’d like to take kids along.

We love messing around on the water, so there’s a whole range of boats here at Emayani; windsurfers, kayaks, even a dhow.

If you want a really romantic end to your day, ask us about arranging a sunset cruise. A boat equipped with a cool box filled with drinks will take you out to sea at around 5.30. You can enjoy the sunset in complete peace then return to shore in time for dinner.

If you like to walk the beaches around Emayani are safe, quiet and unspoiled. You can wander all day and only see a few fishermen.

We can also arrange several excursions for you.

If you’d like to go to Zanzibar for the day, we can have a motorized dhow take you over (weather permitting). The journey takes around 4 hours, leaving you enough time to explore Stone Town and be home at sunset.

You could join a cruise up the Pangani river, this takes you into the mangroves and forests of the interior, providing exceptional bird watching opportunities.

You can explore Pangani’s rich history on a cultural tour, visiting the museum and historical buildings escorted by a knowledgeable and informative guide.

If you have ever wanted to try scuba diving, then why not give it a go while you stay at Emayani? It's the perfect spot.

TANGA - TANZANIA:
Tanga is the most important Tanzanian port after Dar and lies just south of the Kenyan border. Major exports from the port of Tanga include sisal, coffee, tea, and cotton. Tanga is also an important railroad terminus, connecting much of the northern Tanzanian interior with the sea. Via the Tanzania Railways Corporation's Link Line and Central Line, Tanga is linked to the African Great Lakes region and the Tanzanian economic capital of Dar es Salaam.

The town was first ruled by Arabs, then the Germans under Carl Peters who established the settlement in 1888. The Germans developed the town as entry port for the settlers. The harbour and surrounding is the centre of life in Tanga, with its hotels, bars and several markets in several neighbourhoods.

Old buildings constructed at the period of German rule include the Clock Tower, Court House, St Anthony Cathedral, the Tanga Library, and the Railway Station. While places to see around Tanga are the Tongoni Ruins, Amboni Caves, the Galanos Hot Springs, Raskazoni beach and the daily markets in the centre of town.

Tongoni is a small fishing village 17km south of Tanga. It is famous for the 15th century ruins of wells, a mosque and the largest concentration of historical tombs on the East African Coast. It is claimed that Tongoni was established by the Shirazi (people of Persian origin), who established many Islamic settlements in Eastern Africa such as Kilwa and Mafia. The ruins at Tongoni are under the Antiquities department, have been properly excavated and are open to the public.

The Amboni caves are the most extensive natural limestone caves in East Africa formed during the Jurassic Period around 150 million years ago and lie mostly underground. There are 10 caves with fascinating chambers although only one is used for guided tours. The caves are home to thousands of bats and their exit at sunset each evening is a popular event. The caves have religious significance to the local people and are believed to house various spirits as indicated by a ceremonial cavern which is filled with offerings such as obsidian blades and pottery.

The Galanos Hot Springs, named after Christopher Galanos, a sisal plantation owner, are located approximately 8 km from Tanga town. The springs are hot and sulphurous and a bath in the springs is believed to relieve arthritis and skin ailments.

PANGANI - TANZANIA:
Pangani is the Zanzibar of the Tanzanian mainland. It lies 45 km south of Tanga. Although its history goes back a long way it was developed by the Arabs as a settlement and slave trading centre. Being much less known it is much more peaceful than Zanzibar and the beaches around Pangani are virtually unspoilt.

The name Pangani owes to the river that runs through the northern part of the historical town, separating the old buildings and the present-day market from the farms and small houses on the south side. The river itself requires a ferry to cross, its dark brown waters heavy with alluvial silt as it meanders slowly into the ocean.

Pangani is a very old town, it is believed to be established before the 6th Century BC and played an important role during the slave trade era; It was a trading port dealing mainly with slaves and ivory. Several historical sites in and around the town serve as reminders for the strong Arabic influence and later German, British colonial era in Tanganyika. In 1810, the Arabs constructed the central boma building, people were buried alive under the pillars during construction as it was believed this would ensure strong foundations. Later the German administration used the buildings as a colonial district office and added a european style roof giving the building a unique appearance. The intricate Arab carved doors and foundation remain and the building is now used as the district commissioners office. The former prison, painted a fading ochre red, looks over the river’s lazy waters. Old houses along the main road offer lived-in examples of colonial and traditional Swahili architecture, the buildings slowly crumbling against the monsoon winds.

Other attractions include; the original slave depots and slave market where arabs traded slaves to India and Arabia, the Freedom Grounds, Islamic and German graves, ancient mosques and traditional houses. In the streets carpet makers, woodcarvers, basket weavers, painters and other artisans sell a wide variety of hand made items. A German fort facing the Pemba channel is the birth place of sisal growing in africa, here Richard Hindroph, a German botanist, planted the first sisal seedlings in 1892. Along the coastline is a unique coral shore where the fossils of a 200-300 million year old dinosaurus rest in the area known as Mkomo and Mwanaunguja coral.
