OFFBEAT MERU CAMP - MOUNT MERU - KENYA:
Offbeat Safaris pride themselves on providing guests with an exclusive experience in remote wildlife areas. Offbeat Meru Camp epitomises this important goal. The camp is small, traditional and located on the edge of Meru National Park in the Bisanadi National Reserve.

Almost bought to its knees by heavy poaching in the 80's and 90's Meru National Park is now thriving. It is once again home to the big five, after the recent re-introduction of Rhino, as well as a great number of other species including Grevy's Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Leopard, Gerenuk and Lesser Kudu. The park has 13 rivers which flow through the area encouraging a spectacular variety of birdlife. Immortalised by Joy Adamson in her book Born Free and with only 2 other lodges the likelihood of seeing anyone else while you stay here is small - you feel you have the park to yourself.

Hosted by head guide Adrian Allan the camp has the ideal level of comforts. The camp consists of 6 tents - 3 twin and 3 double. Each tent is furnished with a large iron bed, its own en-suite bathroom, traditional bucket shower and flushing loo. In addition, there is 24 hour solar lighting in the tents, while the rest of the camp is lit by traditional tilly lamps. Informal dining is hosted in the mess tent or around campfire. There is also a spacious living room with comfortable sofas, a writing table and bar.

Days are tailored to suit guest's requirement. Activities include day and evening game drives; walking safaris with armed guides; bush breakfasts, picnics and sundowners; fly fishing in the local rivers. This area of Kenya gets quite hot during the dry season. After an active morning in the bush there's no better feeling than coming back and cooling off in the camps stunning infinity swimming pool watching the wildlife as it comes to drink from the Bisanadi River below you.

Seasons
The camp will be open for two distinct periods. It will open in Mid-December through to the end of March. We will close for the rains and re-open on 1st June until end of October. The climate is hot with low humidity.
Seasons
Open - Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct, Dec.
Closed - May and Nov.

MOUNT MERU:
Mount Meru is an active volcano located just 70 kilometres (44 miles) west of Mount Kilimanjaro. It reaches 4,566 metres (14,980 feet) in height but has lost much of its bulk due to an eastward volcanic blast sometime in its distant past, perhaps similar to the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington. Mount Meru most recently had a minor eruption about a century ago. The several small cones and craters seen in the vicinity probably reflect numerous episodes of volcanic activity.

Mount Meru is the topographic centerpiece of Arusha National Park. Its fertile slopes rise above the surrounding savanna and support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife, including nearly 400 species of birds, and also monkeys and leopards.

Eclipsed by the majestic ice dome of its near neighbour - Kilimanjaro, Mt. Meru has never gained its rightful place as a major tourist attraction on the Northern Tanzania circuit. But to anyone visiting Arusha, the jagged profile of this grand volcano, rising from its densely forested flanks, inevitably sends a fascinating, challenging call.

The climb up Meru is not an easy climb - but the lower altitude and shorter distances make it achievable. For the 3 or 4 days invested in the climb, Mt. Meru will yield a rich reward of scenery, wildlife, flowers and geology. Whether as a warm-up for the epochal climb up Kilimanjaro or in combination with an extended visit to the varied and beautiful national parks, Mt. Meru will reward her visitors!
