BOTSWANA KWANDO SAFARIS-FAMILY SAFARI - 4 Day

Kwando Safaris has a positive approach in dealing with families on safari - rather than adopting the more conventional approach which is to tolerate the children at a discount and try keep them out the way.

A specialist guide trained and keen to deal with families is allocated which means that families have their own private vehicle with their own guide and tracker who will look after them both on game drive and in camp. We also assign staff to handle the children while in camp to allow the parents to get a break as well.

The programs are different for each family based on the ages, sexes and interests of the children. They are not only amused but learn a great deal under expert guidance. We find that the children have an amazing time and get far more out of the safari than any adult can get without detracting from other guests experience.

Charles Sebaga, one of our family safaris specialist guides, was born in 1972 in Gudikwa village. He grew up as most boys in his home village did - looking after cattle, hunting, fishing and learning about the bush from his parents. Charles speaks 3 languages (Sesarwa - a Bushman language, Setswana and English). He started working as an aeroplane porter for Northern Air, then Eagle Air charters. He joined Kwando Safaris in 1999 and worked at the head office in Maun for 2 years before passing his guides licence and starting his training as a tracker. He is currently guiding at Lebala camp in the Kwando concession.

Charles was married in 2003 to the mother of his 2 children, a son born in 1998 and a daughter born in 2000. Charles's now calls Maun his home, while he still has many links back to Gudikwa and his roots. His family background make Charles an ideal family safaris guide. He learned from Lisa Reed when Kwando Safaris pioneered the family safaris concept. Charles enjoys reading about cultural differences and interesting books on animal and bird behaviour. He loves listening to his grandfather and grandmother's stories about the old days and comparing them with modern times. Charles' big personality and ready smile are his hallmarks.

Conditions and Restrictions:
Children between 8 - 12 years old are welcomed at full rate, all year round but must take a private vehicle or use the family safaris guides.
Children younger than 8 are accepted when reserving the entire camp.
This service is subject to availability.
Children are more work and often break things in camp and require extra staff to keep them amused and therefore are charged full rate - even if sharing a tent with parents, as we have a finite bed capacity for each camp which we do not exceed.
We can make up to triples in our tents.
Parents often split up with children ie. father plus child and mother plus child.
Kwando Safaris operates only in exclusive, private areas. These large concessions are unfenced and fully intregrated into the surrounding wilderness.

Packages start with your flight on Air Botswana from Johannesburg to Maun (daily departures). From here you are transferred by light aircraft to Oddballs Palm Island where you spend your first and last night including all meals and activities. Accommodation is in 3 man dome tents on wooden decks, complete with camping mattresses and bedding. There are communal flush toilets and hot showers. The kitchen can also bake fresh bread for your camping trip - the tastiest in the Delta!

Day two sees the start of your Mokoro Trail. A mokoro is a canoe hewn from the trunk of a massive tree: in the stern is your poler - a man in perfect balance, he silently pushes you and your mokoro through the endless floodplains, channels and islands of the Okavango.

Your nights will be spent on whatever island presents itself; your days will be divided between silently drifting in your mokoro through crystal clear waterways; discovering the unlimited facets of the Okavango - plants, animals, birds, insects and fish; swimming near sun bleached sandbanks, basking in the hot African sun, relaxing and generally getting close nature. Your poler will take you for nature/ game walks on the larger islands and Chief's Island in particular, where the experience of stalking game is second to none - your poler is an expert is this regard.

There will be no facilities at your bush campsite. We will provide you with all the camping and cooking equipment that you will need as well as food. It is completely up to you whether you wish to include your guide when planning and cooking your meals out in the bush. He will not expect it, but cooking together is one of the things which helps to create a good rapport and is nice to consider.

Your last night is spent back at Oddballs before your light aircraft transfer to Maun and Air Botswana connecting flight to Johannesburg.

Includes: Airfare Johannesburg-Maun-Johannesburg on Air Botswana, light aircraft transfers Maun-Oddballs-Maun, accommodation at Oddballs Palm Island Lodge on first and last night including all meals and activities, two night mokoro trail including food (on a self prepare basis), your mokoro and poler, full camping equipment kit containing: 2 man tent, folding mattress, cutlery, crockery, pots and pans, braai grid and cooler box, park fees.
