BOTSWANA HORSEBACK SAFARIS - 8 Day
|
Riders can now experience the ultimate African adventure - exploring the vast wilderness of the Okavango Delta on horseback. Gallop with herds of wildebeest and zebra, past elephants, splash through the lagoons of the Okavango or simply watch the setting sun whilst listening to the roar of the lions. Qualified guides will lead you on this journey, sharing with you their intimate knowledge of the wilderness.
To explore the Okavango in depth we recommend a stay of 7 nights, which will enable you to visit a fly-camp. You can also take game and night drives, walk with a guide or go out in mokoro's in the flood season. Shorter safaris are also available, the minimum stay being 3 nights. |
|
The base camp features large twin-bedded tents, each with their own traditional bush shower and toilet. The camp is open year round. The fly-camp, utilised in safaris of one week's duration or more, is a smaller more rustic tented camp.
There is a horse to suit everyone - from Arab crossbreeds to large Hanovarian thoroughbreds - with a choice of comfortable good quality English saddles or Western style trail saddles.
These safaris are for riders. You will spend 4 to 6 hours a day in the saddle. You need to feel competent about keeping up with the group, capable of riding at all paces; rising to the trot and controlling your horse at the canter. You may also be required to gallop out of trouble, so we cannot take beginners. There is an age limit of 12 years and over. Anyone over 60 needs to be riding fit and strong.
A typical 7-night itinerary is listed below. However rides depend on local game movements, the level of seasonal floodwaters, time of the year (temperature) etc. Safaris normally commence on Saturdays. 5 or 10 night safaris are also available on fixed departure dates. Departure dates and prices on request.

ITINERARY:
Day 1 -
Depart Johannesburg on Air Botswana to Maun. On arrival in Maun you will be met and a charter plane will fly you directly into the Okavango Delta. Game drive en route to camp. After lunch there is time for a rest before the evening ride when you can get to know your horse. Return, as every evening, to a candle-lit dinner.
Day 2 -
The sun rises as you enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in bed. After a light breakfast we ride westward following elephant trails from one palm island to another. After lunch and a siesta we ride out into the plains, later enjoying a drink while the sun goes down.
Day 3 -
We leave camp early to investigate fresh game tracks, joining semi-aquatic red lechwe as they thunder through the water meadows. Breakfast is waiting for us under large ebony trees. The evening ride is spent exploring the upper flood plains where elephant often gather. As dusk closes in we have drinks around the fire.
Day 4 -
We ride through different country, making our way through clouds of bushman hair grass to an elephant graveyard. We might encounter giraffe or shyer antelope while passing through acacia woodlands. Our pace increases as we break out onto the flood plains, often disturbing troops of baboons. Returning to the camp for an afternoon spent at leisure, we leave in the evening for the Baobab and a night drive by spotlight.
Day 5 -
While the staff packs up we leave for our fly camp, riding into drier Kalahari country. On reaching another river system we find our fly camp looking out over a hippo pool. We stay here for 2 nights. The afternoon may be spent swimming or walking. Fires are lit at night to create a strong human presence to keep marauding animals away from the horses. Night watches are fun and guests usually join in.
Day 6 -
Having kept watch under the stars, the next morning we splash through water on the vast open plains, home to cheetah and giraffe. The riding may be fast as we approach deep reedy areas full of birdlife. After a picnic lunch we venture out again to the large lagoon to listen and watch as the night draws in and a lion starts to call.
Day 7 -
After breakfast we ride back to base camp along the myriad of waterways lined with large trees. We canter through the shallow flood plains avoiding deeper pools of lilies. Here the buffalo gather in numbers and we have to creep up to them using islands for cover. The evening offers a last quiet ride with memorable smells of sage as the sun goes down.
Day 8 -
For your final ride we will go along some of the high palm islands which offer great vistas. We'll maybe take a final exhilarating gallop and run with the game before returning to camp to prepare for your return journey. Depart by light aircraft to Maun in time for your Air Botswana flight to Johannesburg.
