The Odzala National Park is an area with a large variety and a high density of species, great for viewing lowland gorillas!
Due to an outbreak of ebola virus 3 years ago, there is currently a VERY LOW chance of seeing ANY gorillas in Odzala, at the famous bais. We hope that more gorillas will return to these areas from other parts not effected by this outbreak , but we currently cannot offer trips here. We suggest either Gabon or Noubale-Ndoki National Park for Lowland Gorilla viewing.
Highlights:
This is an area with a large variety and a high density of species: from hyena to bongo. You can easily observe lowland gorillas from hides on edges of the forest clearings in the north of the park. Gorillas, as well as other species such as elephants, buffalo, red river hog, and giant forest hog heavily use the Maya North and Lokwe clearings. A ride up the Mambili River by motorised dugout canoe provides access deep in the forest.
LOGISTICS: |
|
Guiding: 1 tracker and 1 guide for a maximum of 4 people for wildlife viewing.
Transportation: by plane from Libreville in Gabon; by 4x4 car from Makokou to the border; by motorised dugout canoe (equipped by an out-board 40cv engine) inside the park; on foot for wildlife viewing.
A camp crew with cook and food / tents etc accompanies the group in a separate motorised dugout and prepares the camps in advance.
Security and level of fitness needed:
Visitors need to be in good physical shape as we can wake up early and go to bed late sometimes after a long day's hike or boat ride. The humid climate can be quite tiring.
Visitors are organised for groups of a maximum of 4 persons.
Children under the age of 16 are not accepted.
Visiting a reserve can be dangerous if simple rules of common sense and security are not observed. Follow the instructions of the guides at all times when hiking in the forest, do not approach animals, and avoid moving about the camp at night.
It is strongly recommended to take out insurance for medical evacuation.
The program may have to be changed at short notice for security, weather or other reasons. The ECOFAC staff and the local guides will always do their utmost to find the best option, even if it means changing the routing. When discovering other cultures and mentalities a sense of tolerance and mutual respect is important.
Includes: Transfers / accommodation / meals / local guides / boats and vehicles / park entry fees / services of John Addison or other guide .
Important Note:
Due to the size of the camps, and more importantly the hides at the salines, and of course the plane, a group of 5 incl guide is maximum. Larger groups can be taken - but they will need to run off slightly different itineraries in order to avoid congestion at the camps . In this case the charter plane could be larger with a saving in the per person cost - a 12 seater caravan on this route is in the region of USD10000.00. Prices are on request only.
