ITINERARY:

Day 1 - Daily departures. Morning departure on South African Airways from Johannesburg to Nairobi, arriving mid afternoon. On arrival you will be met and transferred to the Holiday Inn Nairobi, or similar, for overnight on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2-3 -
This morning you will be collected from your hotel and transferred to Wilson Airport for your flight to Buffalo Springs. The flight will take you close to the spectacular snowcapped peaks of Mount Kenya and over the lush plains of the Laikipia Plateau, home to one of the last great unfenced wildlife populations in Africa. After a 1 hour 15 minute flight, you will land in the desert wilderness of Buffalo Springs, where one of our four-wheel drive vehicles will be waiting to drive you to Samburu Intrepids tented camp. After checking into your riverside tent, you'll have lunch and a short siesta before heading back for the plains - and a variety of close encounters with Samburu's unique and endangered wildlife. Samburu is famous as being home to the rare 'northern species' of Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Somali ostrich and the graceful giraffe-necked generuk antelope. The acclaimed Adventurers' Club at Samburu Intrepids will introduce your children to a host of unusual species in the safety of the camp grounds, including the alternative 'small five' of leopard tortoise, elephant shrew, buffalo weaver, lion ant and rhinoceros beetle. Our qualified team of naturalists are assisted by a highly trained children's animator, who is responsible for the care and wellbeing of younger Adventurers. The Adventurers' Club is dedicated to providing a lasting natural education for teenagers and school groups allowing the adults to enjoy their holiday too! For families, we've a range of thrilling activities, including camel walks, treks up sacred Mount Ololokwe and trips to neighbouring Samburu communities, where the pastoralist way of life has remained unchanged for centuries.

Day 4-5 -
From Samburu we've arranged a civilised noontime departure for the spectacular 45 minute flight south to the bird-fringed shores of Lake Naivasha. The flight will take you over the lush slopes of the Aberdare Mountains, where ancient rainforests and bamboo groves are divided by meandering streams and towering waterfalls, before you descend into the ethereal expanse of the world's largest valley. Landing at our own airstrip, we'll take you straight to the lodge for lunch, followed by an afternoon at leisure on the links of Kenya's most spectacular championship golf course, playing tennis, or lounging by one of the world's most panoramic swimming pools. These two days offer a host of unique activities centred on the string of lakes that line the Rift Valley - Nakuru, Elementeita, Bogoria and Baringo - home to bubbling steam vents, kudu and other antelope, and the greatest diversity of waterbirds on the planet. Closer to home, there are horseback trails through the ancient Eburu Forest, you can walk among the game of the protected sanctuaries at Hell's Gate and Crater Lake, or fish for bass among the hippos and otters on Lake Naivasha. For history buffs, there's a host of evocative trips down memory lane, including the 'gin palaces' where the likes of Lord Errol and Lady Diana Dalamere gambolled away their Happy Valley days, and the lush lawns of Elsemere, where Joy Adamson lived out her later years after releasing the famous Born Free lions. And all this within a stone's throw of the Great Rift Valley Lodge, where our stunning, split-level guestrooms offer some of the latest luxuries on the edge of the oldest landscape known to man. Adventurers' Club activities included for children.

Day 6-7 - After lunch on the sixth day, we'll take you south on a 50 minute flight into the heart of the world's most famous game reserve. Passing over the lush forest of the Mau Escarpment and the sprawling wheat farms of Narok, your plane will descent into a natural Eden, where before you've even landed you'll begin to see the huge herds of elephant, buffalo, zebra and antelope that make the Maasai Mara the world's greatest living spectacle. Mara Intrepids is situated on the banks of the Talek River in the heart of this great wilderness, where you're very likely to see wild animals from your own balcony. But the real aim of the game here is a proper wilderness immersion, and you'll be allocated your own highly trained guide to guide you on as many as three game drives each day. Game drives in the Mara's rolling hills, forests and grassy plains are always different - sometimes sitting amid a hundred-strong herd of elephant, other times tiptoeing past a pride of lions on a kill. The rains in March have nurtured the Mara's grasslands, providing plenty of food for its millions of grazers - and plenty of prey for its prowling predators. Our highly trained children's guides will take your young 'Adventurers' on a variety of educational excursions in the safety of our camp grounds.

Day 8 - On the eighth day we'll fly you back to Nairobi. From Wilson Airport you will be taken to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your return South African Airways flight to Johannesburg.

MT. KENYA CLIMB THE CLASSIC ROUTE - 8 Day

Mt Kenya - the second highest mountain in Africa at 5 199 metres - crowns one of the world's highest National Parks. A spectacularly beautiful area of moorland, forest, lakes, rock and ice, it is a must for lovers of high altitude trekking. The lower slopes are covered with natural forest - home to elephant, buffalo, various monkey species and birds. As one gets higher, the vegetation changes to heath moorland, covered with giant groundsels and lobelia, until the altitude and cold allow only lichens to survive.

The twin peaks of Batian and Nelion can only be climbed by serious/trained climbers - a 700-metre rock face and the cold and altitude makes this a hard task. The next peak - Point Lenana - is accessible to hikers. One passes the Lewis Glacier en route to Lenana - beautiful ice caves and wind blasted ice formations provide stunning photographic opportunities. On a clear day, one can see Mt Kilimanjaro from the top.

Comparisons to Kilimanjaro are common. Both have their good points - being lower, Mt Kenya should be easier - it isn't!!! There are some pretty steep ascents and quite a lot of scree - it is also very cold. Altitude sickness is more common on Mt Kenya than on Kilimanjaro, due to the fact that the " Tourist Route " ( Naro Moru Route ) provides a quick way up the mountain, and a lot of people ascend too quickly.

This route is NOT recommended - except for descent - as it is not scenic and very over-utilised. The " huts " on Mt Kenya are disgusting - old, dirty, surrounded by rubbish and badly run - they should only be used in emergencies. The less utilised routes are, however, very beautiful with incredible views of the surrounding plains and small lakes, as well as the immense peaks of Batian and Nelion.

The route below has been designed over a 10-day recce trip around all the routes for optimum time on the mountain to acclimatise, as well as getting away from the bulk of hikers. It is run as a camping trip - with all equipment supplied. Top quality mountain tents, 20mm high density foam mattresses, camp stools, mess tent, good food and a cook, and qualified guides are supplied, as well as a porter for your pack. Groups are limited to 9 persons per guide.

The " up " route (Sirimon) is accessible all year round - in the dry season (approx.15 January - 15 March, 15 July - 15 September) we will descend through the Chogoria Route, which is one of the most scenic parts of the mountain. Being on the wetter eastern side of the mountain, Chogoria is wet a lot of the year when other routes are dry. Other times we will descend using the Naro Moru route - see itinerary. We can design trips using other routes for groups if required.

Includes: Airfare Johannesburg-Nairobi-Johannesburg on South African Airways, transfers, 2 nights Holiday Inn Nairobi on a bed and breakfast basis, 5 night Mt Kenya climb inclusive of all meals, guide/cook, porters (1 per client), camping equipment, park and camp fees.

Excludes:
Naro Moru River Lodge accommodation (wet season), visas, health requirements, travel insurance, gratuities, drinks, sleeping bag, all items of a personal nature and any service not specified.

Important Note:
Maximum luggage limit 16 kgs per person in rucksacks please - no duffelbags!
Add on safaris to the coast, game parks, other regional destinations can easily be arranged.
Prices are subject to alteration due to airfare increases or any other unforeseen circumstance.

ITINERARY:

Day 1 - Depart Johannesburg on South African Airways to Nairobi. On arrival you will be met and transferred to the Holiday Inn Nairobi. Overnight on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2 -
You will be collected at 08h00 and drive to Nanyuki, which normally takes about 4 hours, arriving at 12h00. Then proceed to Mt Kenya National Park, Sirimon Gate. A picnic lunch will be provided. Lunch time is spent organizing personal climbing equipment for the mountain trek. After lunch, follow the track uphill for 10 kms, forking left at the junction to reach Old Moses camp which is situated at 3 300m. The ascent from Sirimon Gate to Old Moses is 690m. Overnight in high altitude mountain tents. Afternoon walk in the forest - chance of seeing game and forest birds. Note that all camp equipment is supplied, and you have a porter for your kit BUT the porters will only carry packs - not bags - so your kit must be taken up in a pack. Equipment requirements as per our Kilimanjaro kit lists.

Day 3 -
After breakfast leave at 08h00, follow the directions for the direct route, until you reach the fork after one hour. The track becomes a path, and swings right and south round the head of a large valley, crossing several small streams to reach the crest of the ridge between the Otulili and Liki North Valleys. A walk of 3 to 4 hours to Liki North hut at 3 993m.

Day 4 -
Ascend the west side of the Valley, over a ridge, then down into the Mackinders Valley to meet the direct route, taking one to two hours. From here follow the Mackinders Valley - one of the broadest valleys on the mountain with many giant groundsels - to reach Shipton camp. A total of 4 hours from Liki to Shipton camp at 4 250m.

Day 5 - Wake up at 02h00, have tea and biscuits, then leave at 03h00 for the ascent of the third highest peak, Point Lenana (4 985m). This section is a long, hard slog, and the path is indistinct in places. Continue walking across a tough scree, until you come across Harris Tarn. From Harris Tarn, continue up the north face of Point Lenana reaching the summit in time for the sunrise at 06h30. Dry Season - descend from Lenana down the Chogoria Route, to overnight near Mintos Hut or Lake Michaelson (3 659 m). Other times - descend to Teleki Valley on the opposite side of the main peaks to Mackinders camp for a good night's rest.

Day 6 -
Dry Season - descend from Mintos / Michaelson to Meru Mount Kenya Bandas above Chigoria, following the Gorges Valley. It will take 5 hours to reach the bandas at 3 049m. Overnight here - cold beers, hot showers and fireplaces in the rooms!!! Other times - descend to the Met Station (roadhead) on the Naro Moru track and then back to the Naro Moru River Lodge bandas for lunch, dinner and overnight. The bar at the lodge has momentos from climbs dating back many years, and a fireplace. There is an additional cost for overnighting here.

Day 7 - After breakfast continue walking down through the bamboo and indigenous forest to reach Bairunyi to meet up with your transport back to Nairobi. Arrival at the Holiday Inn Nairobi in the afternoon. Overnight on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 8 - Morning at leisure. Lunchtime transfer to the airport for your South African Airways flight back to Johannesburg.
