TANZANIA GOMBE STREAM NATIONAL PARK CHIMPANZEE TREKKING BUDGET - 4 Day

The famous Gombe Stream National Park lies 16 km north of the town of Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika. This is where Jane Goodall did her groundbreaking research on chimpanzees, and the 52 square km park is still a major research area. It consists of well-forested mountainous terrain and supports approximately 200 habituated chimpanzees. The forested stream lines flow from the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley into the waters of Lake Tanganyika, the second deepest lake in the world at 1 500 metres, which swarms with tropical fish. The ridges between the stream lines are miombo woodland. Many species of tree and butterflies (over 250 species) are relict populations of the West African rainforest, isolated by the formation of the Rift.

On your guided walks in Gombe, the chimps are invariably reasonably close to the camp, at a feeding station. On occasion of course it may be necessary to go deeper into the forest and several hours trekking is not uncommon. When trekking please take drinking water and wear good walking boots and long pants. Certain areas can be very steep indeed.

The only section of the park that you may walk unguided would be along the lakeshore. The forest reaches right down to the beach and you should also see plenty of other primates. There is a significant baboon population, which have been the subject of researchers since 1967. Other common primates include vervet, blue, redtail and colobus monkeys.

Access to the park is by boat, and all observation is on foot. There are limited facilities for tourists. Our itineraries cover both a 'budget' and a more 'upmarket' option to suit your individual requirements.

Although not covered in this itinerary, we can also arrange trips that visit BOTH National Parks. The trip from Gombe to Mahale is a full day on a motorized local boat, and therefore it is not an option to combine these two parks if you have less than 7 nights. Please enquire for a tailormade itinerary and quotation.

Both of these parks are rarely visited, but are well worth the effort. The chimpanzee viewing is excellent, and you can be within metres of these active, vocal primates. We strongly recommend that you read some of Jane Goodall's books on them prior to visiting. Some of the researchers may be available to chat to you at the camps.

Access to Kigoma is by scheduled (from Dar es Salaam) or charter flights (from Nairobi/Arusha/Mwanza), with the scheduled flights being the cheaper option. Schedules from Dar es Salaam currently operate daily (excluding Thursdays). There is an airstrip near Mahale, so if you are chartering in you could fly in direct and take a boat trip back. All prices are based on four persons travelling, but the increase in cost for groups of less than this is not high. We prefer to restrict our groups to eight persons.

Includes: Airport transfers on arrival/departure from Kigoma, boat transfer Kigoma-Gombe-Kigoma, all meals, park accommodation and bedding on budget option / tented camps on upmarket option, guide & porter fees, chimp trekking/park fees.

Excludes: drinks, gratuities, all items of a personal nature and any service not specified.

Important Note:
All prices are subject to change due to airfare increases or any other unforeseen circumstance.
Maximum luggage limit 15kgs per person on light aircraft transfers.
The parks officials hold the right to refuse admittance to both Gombe and Mahale for chimp trekking should the person be sickly in any way - for example colds, flu, and other possible contagious diseases.
Remember that the chimpanzees can move a lot during a day, and you will have to be prepared for some good hard walking.
There is an upmarket option available for this trip.
Health requirements - Yellow Fever inoculations are necessary (this must be done no later than 10 days prior to departure). Anti-malaria tablets are also necessary. Please enquire for details of travel clinics operating in your area.

Visas -
Should you be travelling on a South African passport you will need a visa for Tanzania. This takes approximately 3 working days and can be done at the Tanzania High Commission in Pretoria. We can make the necessary arrangements on your behalf, alternatively they can be contacted on telephone: or at 822 George Avenue, Arcadia, Pretoria. You will need a valid passport (your passport must have at least 3 blank pages), 2 passport photographs and 2 completed forms. Other nationalities - please check with our office or the Tanzania High Commission. It is also possible to obtain a visa on arrival.

Travel Insurance - We strongly recommend that you take out Travel Insurance for the duration of your holiday. Please contact us for further details.

ITINERARY:

Day 1-Budget Option - Arrive Kigoma. Transfer from airport and boat transfer (2 hours) to Gombe. Here we are completely self sufficient - providing food, drinks, bedding, etc. and using the park indoor double room accommodation, the large number of baboons in the area making camping impossible. On safari you will be accompanied by a local guide/camp manager, as well as boatmen and cooks, etc. and all bedding, chairs and tables are provided. Guiding on walks is done by the parks guides, who can explain the intricacies of chimpanzee behaviour and their family life, etc. We use 9 metre local boats, powered by outboard engines. They have sun canopies, HF radios, seats, etc. Fishing in the lake for Nile Perch, Nkupe and Bream is offered, and the lake supports numerous colourful cichlids. These are not fast boats, but are safe and can handle the rough conditions sometimes encountered on the lake.

Day 2-3 - Full days in Gombe trekking chimps, etc.

Day 4 - Return boat transfer to Kigoma. Transfer to airport.

TANZANIA KILIMANJARO MARATHON LAND ONLY - 4 Day

International Residents - Situated south of the equator - in Tanzania - at 5 895 metres, this is Africa's highest mountain and the highest "free standing" mountain in the world. Huge permanent glaciers flow down from the summit, and the sheer presence of this huge mountain dominates the entire area. An icon in Africa, "Kili " as she is affectionately known, is one of the sights every person should see at least once in his or her life.

A standard 42.2 km marathon and a 21.1 km half marathon will be run from the town of Moshi, Tanzania.

This race has been set up to promote the sport in Tanzania, and has the official backing of the Tanzania Tourist Board, the Tanzania Amateur Athletics Association, the IAAF, and is registered with AIMS.

The marathon route leaves Moshi stadium and heads down towards the town, and then along the main road to Dar-Es-Salaam for approximately 8-9km. This section of the route is relatively flat, and there are plenty of well-wishers along the road. We turn around and head back to the town of Moshi, tracking down into the actual town itself before turning toward the mountain and heading up a long, steady ascent towards Mweka. The uphill climb is gradual, but with Kilimanjaro towering above and all the local villagers out to cheer you on, the time passes quickly. The turnaround point marks approximately 32km and the last section is a fast downhill run back toward the stadium. Regular water tables as well as 'sponging points' and the odd 'shower' keep the runners refreshed and cool along the entire route. The route passes through many small holder farms, villages, parts of town, banana and coffee plantations and patches of forest, providing great excitement to the residents who give ample vocal support.

For those running the half marathon, the route also starts at the Moshi stadium and after a short section on the flat, it follows the gradual uphill route to Mweka as per the full marathon - before turning around at approx 10km to return to the stadium again. The atmosphere in the stadium is electric with local bands playing, entertainment, crowds of local enthusiasts to cheer the runners, and lots of food and drink for sale.

The logistics of the operation are run by the Kilimanjaro Marathon Club and the members of both the Tanzania Amateur Athletics Association (TAAA) and the local Kilimanjaro Amateur Athletics Association (KAAA).

Travel arrangements and packages to access the race are being provided by Wild Frontiers, the official tour operator, a South African, Tanzanian and Ugandan based tour operator, who are experienced in Tanzania travel and logistics and who are members of the South African Tour Operators Association and ASATA, and who is the largest tour operator into Tanzania from South Africa.

The race is completely backed up, with twelve water points being provided and manned by local organisations. Crowd control and traffic control are provided for, as is medical assistance and communications. Official timekeeping is arranged, as is an official prize giving and function attended by local dignitaries.

Includes: Shuttle bus transfers Nairobi-Moshi-Nairobi, Marathon entry package: guaranteed bib number, t-shirt, medal, goody bag, Wild Frontiers hospitality tent facility at finish, return transfers to/from stadium, 3 nights accommodation at hotel in Moshi on a bed and continental breakfast basis, Marathon carbo-loading supper on Saturday, 03 March 2007.

Excludes: Airfare to/from Nairobi, visas, travel insurance, health requirements, additional meals, gratuities, drinks, all items of a personal nature and any other service not specified.

If you would like to make further travel arrangements after the race we can organize Kilimanjaro climbs, lodge safaris, luxury and budget camping safaris, as well as excursions to Zanzibar.

Health Requirements - Please note you will need a Yellow Fever inoculation. This must be done no later than 10 days prior to departure. If you have had any previous history of liver disorders you must consult your physician first. Malaria prophylactics are a must.

Travel Insurance - Please ensure you have sufficient medical cover for the duration of your trip.

Prices are subject to change due to any unforeseen circumstance.

TANZANIA MAHALE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK FLY-IN PACKAGE FROM ARUSHA - 4 Day

Mahale Mountains National Park is also on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, 120 kms south of Kigoma. It is a much larger park than Gombe (1 600 sq km), and the mountains rise to 1 800 metres, supporting montane forest, bamboo and grasslands, as well as miombo woodlands.

The park supports over 1 000 chimpanzees, as well as lion, leopard and buffalo, and a host of smaller mammals and primates. A group of 100 chimps have been studied by Japanese researchers since 1961. Vegetation is similar to Gombe, having also been isolated by the Rift formation.

The chimps in this region are less readily seen than those at Gombe, but the wilderness atmosphere of the forest and the beautiful scenery make up for this! Expect a much longer and more strenuous day of trekking than at Gombe. The chimps are often far away, and the terrain is rugged. Access is also by boat, and as with Gombe we offer both a 'budget' (camping) and a more 'upmarket' option on our packages. We have also included a 3 night fly-in option from Arusha to Greystoke Mahale. We do not recommend visiting Mahale during the rainy season from November to April.

Although not covered in this itinerary, we can also arrange trips that visit BOTH National Parks. The trip from Gombe to Mahale is a full day on a motorized local boat, and therefore it is not an option to combine these two parks if you have less than 7 nights. Includes: Light aircraft transfers with the Tanganykia Flying Company Arusha-Mahale-Arusha, accommodation at Greystoke Mahale, all meals and activities, chimp trekking/park fees, all drinks (excluding champagne)

Excludes: Gratuities, all items of a personal nature and any service not specified.

Important Note:
Maximum luggage limit 15kgs per person on light aircraft transfers.
All prices are subject to change due to airfare increases or any other unforeseen circumstance.

ITINERARY:

Day 1-3 - Mondays only. Light aircraft transfer with the Tanganyika Flying Company from Arusha to Mahale via Katavi (approximate flying time 5 hours). On arrival you will be met and transferred to Greystoke Mahale, a 90 minute dhow /20 minute speedboat trip. Spend 3 nights here including all meals, safari activities, drinks and park fees. On a wide, golden beach along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, sheltered by the dense forests of the Mahale Mountains, is the tiny sanctuary of Greystoke Mahale. Greystoke is within hiking distance of the 60 strong M-group, one of the most habituated groups. Accommodation here is in exotic, barefoot luxury bandas beneath shady trees on the edge of the beach, with extraordinary, and luxurious, interiors made out of recycled dhow timber. Each of the 6 bandas is an open fronted room, adorned with local fabrics, with large beds, mosquito nets, electric solar lighting and a dressing room. Private bathrooms adjoin each room via a short timber boardwalk. There is a large, airy 'chill-out' deck above each room. Activities include chimp tracking, forest walks, snorkelling, fishing, kayaking, swimming and sundowner dhow trips.

Day 4 - Thursdays only. Light aircraft transfer from Mahale to Arusha.
