TANZANIA'S SOUTHERN SECRET SELOUS & RUAHA LODGE SAFARI - 9 Day

Known to only a few dedicated travellers, these two reserves offer some of Africa's best game areas. Disturbed by little tourist traffic, the feeling of the Africa of old is strong. The recent introduction of a scheduled charter service between these areas has made them easily accessible.

The Selous Game Reserve: The largest in Africa at 55 000 sq km, the reserve has various ecosystems ranging from savanna, miombo woodland to riverine. The Rufuji River is the lifeblood of the region, and supports an impressive population of hippo, crocodile and amazing birdlife. There are over 800 000 large mammals in the park, and over 350 bird species. The African Wild Dog is fairly common in the area. This is one of the few areas where game viewing is done on foot, by boat, and by vehicle. Best months for game are June - December.

Ruaha National Park:
Covering an area of over 10 000 sq km, Ruaha is home to a large elephant population. It is a transition zone between the East African and Southern African species of flora and fauna - one of the few places where you can see Roan, Sable and both Greater and Lesser Kudu. Lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog are the major predators, with both Striped and Spotted Hyena being seen. Most of the park is miombo woodland, with the riverine areas along the Great Ruaha River being combretum / commiphora woodland with plenty of baobabs. Over 400 bird species have been recorded. Best time to visit: May - December / January.
