Zambia General Information

Often described as the "Real Africa", this landlocked country is famed for its diversity. From Mosi-o-Tunya (the Victoria Falls), to Nile Perch fishing in Lake Tanganyika in the north, Lower Zambezi canoeing trails, and the famous North and South Luangwa Valley game areas, Kafue and the wetlands of Kasanka and the Bengwelu swamps, a bird watchers paradise.

The Luangwa Valley offers visitors a chance to explore on foot (or if you prefer you may go on a classical 4x4 safari) and the region is well known for its leopard population and night drives, as well as elephant, lion, buffalo and abundant birdlife. The camps are top quality and run by enthusiastic ecologists. Enjoy exploring this part of Africa by canoe, game vehicle or on foot. Wild Frontiers can assist in tailor making you the ideal safari in Zambia.

Kafue - Kafue National Park - 22 400 square kilometres of breathtaking wilderness and the greatest species diversity of all the national parks in Zambia. It hosts 158 species of mammals including 4 of the Big 5, 481 species of birds and 58 species of fish. This makes it a perfect destination for nature lovers, bird watchers and anglers alike.

Livingstone - The former capital of Zambia is situated about 8 kilometres from Victoria Falls. Yet, despite its growing popularity amongst discerning travellers, Livingstone (and Zambia in general) has resisted the temptation to appeal to the mass market. So while the services offered in the lodges and camps is of top quality, everything is on a small, highly-personalised scale. This is the perfect alternative to the hustle and bustle of Victoria Falls town and a great finish to any safari.

Lower Zambezi -
Bordering Zimbabwe, the Lower Zambezi National Park lies along the shoreline of the Zambezi River and is relatively unexplored. Prime pursuits are canoe safaris and traditional walking safaris using lodges and tented camps as a base. It is also favoured by sports fishermen in search of the famous Tiger Fish.

South Luangwa - The 9 050 sq. km South Luangwa National Park is situated in Eastern Zambia and forms part of the Great Rift Valley. The Luangwa River and its tributaries form the lifeblood of the region, and its twisting course and oxbow lakes form a haven for bird and wildlife.

The Luangwa is one of the few parks in Africa that allows night driving with high-powered spot beams to glimpse the fascinating nocturnal creatures otherwise not visible or active during the day. Lions hunting, hyena, civets, honey badgers and porcupines are commonly seen at night. Most notable however, are the leopards, which are frequently observed stalking and hunting their prey.

There is a large elephant population, as well as Thornicrofts Giraffe, Puku and the more common species, which can be seen in large numbers, not to mention the fantastic hippo population in the river. Eland and Sable occur in the more remote areas of the park. Pels Fishing Owl, Carmine Bee-eater colonies and over 40 species of raptor make Luangwa a birders paradise.

The park is open year round - the rainy season (January - April) being particularly rewarding for birdwatchers. There are numerous camps in the park, most of which offer walking, driving and night game viewing.

Victoria Falls, Zambia -
The cascades at Victoria Falls are one of the natural wonders of the world, and these packages allow you to explore the area fully. Not only are the falls themselves well worth a visit, but there are many optional activities to enjoy. Visitors can kayak and canoe on the upper Zambezi, go fishing or cruising, walk amongst the wildlife, take horseback trails, go white water rafting on the rapids below the Falls, and for the extremely adventurous, go bungi jumping 111 metres off the Victoria Falls bridge.
