ZIMBABWE VICTORIA FALLS - THE ELEPHANT CAMP (Half Day)

Join the Wild Horizons herd of 12 adult and 5 baby elephant for the safari of a lifetime, based just 20 kms from Victoria Falls. Safaris are taken twice daily in the early morning and in the late afternoon. This allows the elephant time off during the day to feed naturally through the bush, visit various waterholes and just be elephants for a while.

A strong emphasis is placed on an elephant experience rather than just an elephant ride. Guests are encouraged to interact with the elephants as much as possible and hopefully obtain a better insight into the history, day to day life and long term objectives of the Elephant Camp. The daily activities are as follows:

Morning Safaris:

Guests are collected at approximately 06h15 and transferred to Woodlands Estate - home of the elephants. The transfer lasts approximately half an hour and game is often seen on the way. On arrival tea/coffee and biscuits are served and guests are introduced to the elephant. A short training session follows and guests witness the bond between groom and elephant being reinforced and new handling commands being introduced.

Training is an integral part of the relationship between the elephant and groom and continues throughout the elephants working life. The elephants are then saddled and the safari commences. The elephant follow ancient game trails led by an armed guard on foot. The grooms are friendly and knowledgeable and explain as much as possible about fauna and flora along the way. A bush breakfast is served mid morning and the elephants then roam wild until the afternoon activity. Guests are transferred back to their hotels arriving at approximately 11h00.

Afternoon Safaris:

Guests are collected at 15h15 and are transferred to Woodlands Estate where the elephants will have been feeding during the day. Soft drinks are served on arrival and introductions are made between the guests and elephants. A short time will be spent with the elephants prior to saddling them and setting off on safari. This time enables the elephants to familiarize themselves with the new guests. The elephants slowly make their way back to camp following ancient game trails while the grooms explain about the fauna and flora along the way. Sundowners and snacks are served in the bush prior to the guests making their way back to town by 19h00.

Prices are subject to change due to any unforeseen circumstance.

Day 1 - (Daily departures) Fly from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls. On arrival you will be met by a representative from Cansaf Adventures and transferred to town for a guided tour of the Falls. Your professional guide will take you to the best spots to view the Falls, explaining the vegetation and rock formations and pointing out the different bird species. This trip will take approximately 2 hours. (Package price excludes National Park fees of USD 10 per person for SA Residents with ID/passport). Depart Victoria Falls at around 16h00. The transfer into the Zambezi National Park will take approximately 2 hours - 50 kms of game drive in an open vehicle. The first night stop is made at Tsowa campsite. On arrival guests have the opportunity to go for a short game drive whilst the camp is set up for the night by camp staff. Arrive back to a paraffin lit camp with drinks waiting for you. A quiet evening is spent around the camp fire, on the banks of the river, and a wholesome dinner is served.

Day 2 - Today there is opportunity for an early nature stroll before a full English breakfast is served. Your guide will give an in depth safety talk and demonstration on how to paddle. The vessels used on the river are 16 foot Klepper canoes made from fibre glass. These are very stable structures that carry 2 people using double bladed paddles, all of which helps manoeuvrability through periods of white-water (grade 1-2 rapids) and braided channels. The day is spent canoeing 18 km downstream through the Sansimba Rapids, game viewing and exploring channels. Along the way stop for a picnic lunch of cold meats, rolls, quiches, fruit and salads. The second night stop is made at Chundu campsite. You are welcomed into camp with tea and coffee before settling into a quiet evening around the camp fire on the banks of the river. Enjoy a wholesome dinner.

Day 3 - The final 18 kms downstream towards Victoria Falls begins after a full English breakfast. The morning is spent exploring the many channels and enjoying the small rapids of the Upper River. At midday, your group is met by the back-up vehicle. A lunch is set out in the shade of a large tree on the banks of the river. The afternoon paddle carries you closer to the Falls, as you explore channels amongst beautiful islands. At around 16h00 you meet the pick-up vehicle and enjoy cold beers and minerals. Transfer back to Victoria Falls town and overnight at Ilala Lodge on a bed and breakfast basis. Ilala Lodge is a small exclusive lodge, renowned for its delicious cuisine. All rooms have en-suite facilities, air conditioning and ceiling fans with superb views over the bush to the spray of the Falls. There is a restaurant, bar, pool deck and pool bar.

Day 4 - Morning at leisure. Transfer from your hotel to the airport in time for your return flight to Johannesburg.

ZIMBABWE SAFARI - 4 Day

Zimbabwe is becoming more and more well known as a great birding destination - and these trips are designed to bring the best of Zimbabwe's birding within easy reach. Staying in small, exclusive lodges, not big hotels, we access the bird-rich Victoria Falls / Kazungula area for Taita Falcon, Lesser Jacana and other specials.
