Zimbabwe General Information

Situated immediately north of South Africa, Zimbabwe is a safe, affordable destination. Victoria Falls and Hwange National Park in the northwest, Mana Pools and Kariba in the north, and the little explored Gona-re-Zhou and Matopos National Parks in the south are some of the highlights. Zimbabwe is justifiably famous for its' adventure tourism - walking, safaris, canoe safaris, whitewater rafting, kayaking, bunjee jumping, elephant back safaris - whole new slant on game-viewing and enjoying and appreciating the wonders of nature. Combine this with excellent hotels and lodges, friendly people, good transport and communication links and Zimbabwe becomes a natural choice for a vacation, business incentive or conference.

Chitake Springs -
The Chitake River has its source in the Mana Pools escarpment of the Zambezi Valley. A perennial spring, at the foothills, which flows for 1 kilometre within the canyon walls of the Chitake River, provide the only source of water for a large concentration of game in this area. Herds of buffalo, elephant, zebra and antelope which depend on this water for survival sustain a large pride of more than 20 lion which, after 10 years, are accustomed to people walking and even allow groups to approach to within 20 metres while feeding with no aggression. There are also numerous leopard. The optimum game viewing months are from July to October.

Activities include bush walks and sitting in 'hides' observing game at the water. There are no facilities provided by National Parks at Chitake Springs therefore, along with the camp staff, tents, beds, sheets, blankets and camp equipment, we have a portable bush shower - basic, but adequate - giving the real atmosphere of a safari camp. You will enjoy daily walks with your guide returning to the camp at night. Drop toilets are provided. The trips are guided by armed, licensed, Zimbabwe Professional Guides. A permanent tent camp has been erected, from whence guests are taken on foot into some spectacular rugged territory in miombo woodland with deep gorges and numerous springlines.

Hwange - Zimbabwe's largest National Park (14000 sq km), Hwange is renowned for its elephant population as well as other game. In the south, walking safaris are undertaken, and most lodges offer day and night drives.

Imbabala - Imbabala is a small private concession nestling in the extreme north western corner of Zimbabwe where four countries meet, namely: Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia, Botswana. The safari camp is positioned in the riverine fringe on the banks of the Zambezi and offers some of the most amazing gameviewing and birdwatching available. Drift along the Zambezi in a specially designed pontoon, sit quietly in the hide on the floodplain, drive leisurely around the concession or walk stealthily through the bush. Birdwatching is unequalled due to overlaps from Botswana and the variety of habitats and riverine vegetation.

Lake Kariba - Kariba - Zimbabwe's inland sea - is a 5000 square kilometre paradise. The shoreline is home to large game populations, especially Matusadona National Park, and the lake itself is a fisherman's dream. Where else can you catch the fighting tigerfish whilst watching herds of elephant and buffalo? On the escarpment overlooking the lake lies Chizarira - a highland sanctuary for game, mountainous, exclusive and untouched.

Mana Pools -
Mana Pools area, a World Heritage Site, renowned for its incredible abundance of variety of wildlife. Here the river is filtered by a series of channels and pools, which attract vast quantities of animals. Large herds of buffalo swim out to the grassy islands, and many pods of hippo bathe in the clear waters. This is the Eden of people's dreams! At Mana Pools the Zambezi meanders through a wide valley of channels, sandbanks and islands with Zambia on one side and Zimbabwe on the other. It is these lagoons and channels that attract hordes of Africa's largest animals in the dry season and make this probably the greatest concentration of wildlife in the whole of this great continent.

Matobo Hills - The granite domes and castle koppies of the Matobo Hills are among some of the most majestic rock sceneries in the world. This area is renowned for its high concentration of raptors and in particular the Black eagle.

Mavuradonha - Geographically, the Mavuradonha Wilderness comprises the Mavuradonha Mountains, the Malingura Hills, the Mvukwes Range, the Rwazi Plateau and part of the Zambezi Escarpment. The Zambezi Valley is situated to the north of the Wilderness. Geologically the Wilderness is at the head of the Great Dyke Complex. This is a rugged, unique and distinct line of hills that cuts through the granite shield of Zimbabwe, 760 km north to south. The Great Dyke is possibly part of the same geographical fault line as the Great Rift Valley and is composed of ancient rock solidified from molten magma deep within the Earth.

Due to the ruggedness and remoteness of the Mavuradonhas, there is only one road into the Wilderness, which terminates at Kopje Tops Lodge - the only way to get around is on horse back or foot. No electricity and throbbing generators to disturb the peace, you will feel you are truly away from it all and may never want to leave.

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe - The cascades at Victoria Falls are one of the natural wonders of the world, and these packages allow you to explore the area fully. Not only are the falls themselves well worth a visit, but there are many optional activities to enjoy. Visitors can kayak and canoe on the upper Zambezi, go fishing or cruising, walk amongst the wildlife, take horseback trails, go white water rafting on the rapids below the Falls, and for the extremely adventurous, go bungi jumping 111 metres off the Victoria Falls bridge.
